A guide to driving this Autumn

Autumn is a season famous for its harvest times, turning leaves, cooling temperatures and darkening nights. One of the most stunning signs of Autumn is the turning of the leaves. The shorter days are a sign too that trees to begin to prepare for winter, but it also brings changes to the roads too. Read on for tips from our Car Servicing experts at the Prestige Cars Kent Service Centre.

Dazzle

Glare due to the sun being lower in the sky is more likely to be a problem at this time of year so always remember to use your sun visors and sunglasses.

To improve vision:

  • Clean your windscreen, inside and out, removing the hazy film that builds up over the summer.
  • Replace your wiper blades if they’re worn, damaged, or more than a few years old.
  • Use a screen wash additive, not washing up liquid.
  • Slow down if you’re dazzled.
  • Use headlights to help others see you.

Remember:

  • If the sun’s behind you, it's in the eyes of those coming towards you.
  • If the sun’s in your eyes it's probably blinding drivers that are following you too.

Batteries

Batteries generally last around five years. If there's any sign that your battery is struggling now, it is likely to let you down during the winter. Replace it now to avoid hassle later on.

Bulbs

Check your car's lights every few weeks throughout the year, but especially in autumn as we head into the darker months. Your handbook shows you how to change a bulb but you might need a garage to change headlight ones. Remember to check the brake lights and number plate lights as well.

Tyres

We recommend at least 3mm of tread for the winter, so if yours is getting low, buy new tyres now before the cold sets in.

Antifreeze

  • Antifreeze is important all year-round to prevent corrosion.
  • It should be checked as part of the regular service schedule.
  • If in doubt get our servicing team to check the antifreeze for you.
